Please contact us to discuss your requirements. The more information you are able to provide, the better we will be able to advise accordingly.

You are very welcome to make further enquiries, or ask any questions you need to, without any obligation to proceed. We want you to be confident that we are the right people for you before you commit.
How much notice do we have to give?

Please provide us with as much notice as possible please.

We will perform rituals and tours at short notice, depending on our availability, but we prefer as much notice as possible so that we can provide you with the consistently high level of service we aim to provide.

For legal weddings you need to provide to the Registrar: a minimum of 29 days and a maximum of 12 weeks. The minimum can be waived in exceptional (usually medical emergencies) circumstances at the discretion of the Registrar.

Where is Orkney and how do we get there? Can you recommend anywhere for us to stay or hold our wedding reception?

Orkney is a group of islands off the north-east coast of Scotland; legally it is part of Scotland. On request we can send you a leaflet all about how to get to Orkney and travelling within Orkney.

Many of our friends run B&Bs, hotels and self-catering lets - or there are places where we have stayed ourselves or successfully used before which we are able to recommend.

Please note we can only make recommendations, we cannot make bookings on your behalf for legal reasons and because we are celebrants, not wedding planners. Destination Orkney / Visit Scotland will be able to provide more specific advice.

We're not Pagans, or even particularly religious, can you still perform a tour / ritual / ceremony for us?

Let us reassure you that you certainly don't have to think of yourself as a 'Pagan' to use any of our services.

Most people who contact us inform us that they are not Pagan. With regards to tours, we can provide as much 'spirituality' as you require - we leave it to you to dictate the tone of the tour. With regards to rituals and ceremonies, we have trained as independent secular celebrants so that we provide rituals which reflects the beliefs of the people who commission us. We choose wording which reflects your beliefs, rather than our beliefs. We are very open minded to all manner of beliefs.

The exception to the above is our fully legal weddings which must contain some reference to Paganism. We can sensitively include some earth or green spirituality, so that your ceremony can be classed as religious rather than civil.

In our experience, people who express a wish to have a ceremony performed by us often don't identify with any named religion, instead many have an affinity with nature, or consider themselves to be more spiritual than religious, or they may think of themselves as agnostics. What they do tend to have in common is a desire to have a ritual with a bit more depth and sincerity than a civil ceremony with a Registrar, but without wanting to take the route of a conventional church wedding.

We are also sensitive when creating ceremonies where the bride and groom, for example, have different beliefs; to date we've always been able to design a ritual fully acceptable to both parties. Likewise, we are diplomatic when performing weddings where the couples' beliefs differ from that of their invited guests or family. The feedback we tend to receive from wedding guests is often: 'I was really nervous about attending a Pagan wedding, but those words were so beautiful ...'
How much will it cost?

For tourist guiding please refer to our tour guiding fees.

Our crafts are priced individually because they are all made to order, but guidance is given with each craft item by type on our crafts page.

Our fees for rituals start from £200, for baby-namings and funerals. Whilst weddings and relationship blessing rituals start from £749.

If you are concerned about the cost, we understand that everyone has unique needs and differing budgets so, if our set fees are beyond what you can afford, please contact us about providing a service for you that is costed at a level that is comfortable for you as well as being fair for us. We will always try to tailor our services to match your requirements and budget on request. Promise!
Why are you asking us for a reservation fee before you can confirm what your total charge will be?

If you wish to book a date for tourist guiding, we will require a non-returnable deposit of £100GB per day. This secures the date just for you. We usually provide tourist guiding at a fixed half- or full-day rate, however, occasionally guests ask us to provide extras which may incur additional costs. The more information you provide to us, the more accurate our quote will be.

If you wish to book a date for a ceremony, we will require a non-returnable reservation fee of £100GB. We will not ask for this until after we have agreed with you that we are the best people to provide this service to you. If we agree and you ask us to, this will secure the date just for you.

In all cases, the more information you provide to us, the better able we will be to provide an accurate quote to you for the services you are requesting of us. Our fees will usually be in accordance with those laid out in this web-site.

When we accept a deposit for a booking, for any of our services, we cannot usually accept any other work on that date; your reservation fee covers us for any loss of income should you cancel your booking for any reason. Wholly at our discretion, we will hold any monies paid by you against a different date (if that date is free) if you subsequently need to postpone and / or change the date of your ritual or tour.

Promise!
Do you make hand-fasting cords? Do you make any other crafts?

Yes, we make handfasting cords and a range of other crafts, on request, and provided we have adequate advanced notice please because everything is made to order.
Can you help us to arrange our wedding reception and other wedding related things?

We are celebrants, not wedding planners. We only plan the ceremony itself.

We are happy to make recommendations to you for other aspects of your special day but, for legal reasons, we are not able to make bookings for you with other agencies, you would have to do that yourselves. We can recommend an Orkney-based wedding planner on request.
Can you recommend a photographer for us?

We are happy to recommend professional photographers with whom we have worked successfully with previously.

We offer a photography service ourselves; suitable for smaller wedding parties and all other ceremonies.
Do you specialise in any types of wedding?

Well, we didn't intend to but, although we've performed small intimate weddings with just the couple, the Celebrant and two witnesses present, as well as much bigger weddings with a hundred guests, most of our weddings do tend to be for smaller gatherings. We never meant for this to happen, of course, and our services are available to ANYONE, but most of our couples tend to be people who have been married before and now want something which is about THEM, with a focus on the ritual and their own particular relationship.

We allow ourselves a little self-congratulation for those 'interfaith' ceremonies we've performed for couples where each party to the marriage have different beliefs (most often where one is a Pagan and the other is a Christian). We are experienced in designing rituals which are fully acceptable to people of more than one faith. Likewise, we are sensitive when performing weddings where the couples' beliefs differ from that of their invited guests or family. We find that by using inclusive and open language in our rituals, situations such as these can be dealt with to everyone's satisfaction and comfort.
Do you do surprise ceremonies? I want to surprise my partner with a wedding!

Although a surprise wedding sounds romantic, we are not allowed by law to perform legal weddings unless both parties are fully understanding that they are entering into a legal marriage contract. Refer to this official advice from the National Records of Scotland.

We are, however, open to the possibility of performing non-legal betrothals, engagements, marriage proposals, relationship blessings, and renewal of vows ceremonies, on the request of just one person, but only after some discussion as to its appropriateness for your relationship please.
Do you have any sample rituals we could view please?

Of course, we have several themed sample ceremonies which we can send on request, but please bear in mind that these are just ideas for you to gain a sense of what is possible, YOUR ceremony will be unique to you.
What is the Registrar's involvement in a legal Pagan wedding in Scotland?

The Registrar prepares the paperwork, called a Marriage Schedule, from the information supplied on the M10 forms which the couple  complete and submit. During this process, the Registrar checks who you are and that you are free to marry each other. You pay a small fee to the Registrar for this. You collect the Marriage Schedule from the Registrar before your wedding.

You need to show your Marriage Schedule to your celebrant before your wedding ceremony can proceed. Your wedding cannot proceed without it (and is a criminal offence for the celebrant if they do proceed without it).

Immediately after your wedding ritual, you, the Celebrant, and two witnesses sign the Marriage Schedule. Within 3 days (preferably less) you return the Marriage Schedule to the Registrar to register your marriage with National Records of Scotland (this can be done by post if you make arrangements with the Registrar to do so). At this stage you also purchase a copy of your Marriage Certificate for a further fee from the Registrar.

There are two types of wedding ceremony in Scotland: civil - performed entirely by a registrar - and religious - performed by an approved celebrant (like us) or by a Minister. In Scotland, the Registrar does NOT perform the marriage ceremony when it is a religious ceremony, that is done by your celebrant.
Do we need a special pen and ink to sign the Marriage Schedule?

Yes, you need to sign in black ink using a fountain pen. We will loan you this for your ceremony. You don't need to bring or buy one yourself (unless you want to).
How do we get married at a stone circle?

Our most popular location is the Ring of Brodgar, a 5000 year old stone circle and the third largest in the British Isles ... but Orkney has so many beautiful places to choose from!

Historic Environment Scotland own or manage many of the ancient and historic sites in Orkney, including the Ring of Brodgar, and we have excellent relationships with their staff which facilitates gaining permission for rituals. As we are both trained archaeologists, Historic Environment Scotland know that we would never do anything to harm their properties and that we will advise couples on what is feasible and practical. We can assist with liaising with Historic Environment Scotland to gain permissions to hold ceremonies at sites which they own or manage.

Where do you recommend we get married?

Have a think about the sorts of places you would like and we will be happy to make recommendations. Cliff tops, hills, ruined palaces, beaches, dramatic coastlines ... or even inside at one of Orkney's many excellent wedding venues.

Is there anywhere we CAN'T hold a ceremony?

Please don't ask us to conduct a ritual anywhere that is unsafe or where access to the public is generally denied. We are happy to advise on this.

We are generally not able to obtain permission to perform ceremonies at sites which are owned or managed by other religious faiths. Likewise, out of respect to other religious faiths, we will not ask to perform rituals in any site owned or managed by them (although we are honoured if ever invited by them to do so).

Please note that this specifically means we are NOT able to conduct ceremonies in the Italian Chapel and / or St Magnus Cathedral.
Can we include our pet(s) in our ritual / bring them along on our tour?

We know that Pagan couples love their pets and lots of Pagans have a particular affinity with animals. Our cat, for example, is not just a pet, but our friend, familiar, and child substitute ... for many of our guests, their pets are an integral part of their family too.

So why leave your pets out of your special day?

At Spiritual Orkney we try to be as accommodating as possible if you want to bring your pet along on tour with us, as long as due consideration is paid to other people and wildlife. You also need to be aware that pets, other than assistance animals, are not allowed into some sites - we will advise but this mainly applies to inside sites and those serving food.

We are happy to work with you to advise on the practicalities of including your animal companions in your ceremony - please do ask.

Dogs are particularly suited to being included and we are always pleased to work with friendly gentle dogs that are on a lead please. Perhaps your dog(s) could bring in your rings tied in a little bag around their collar?

And very well behaved dogs are sometimes (if they are permitted) given a little of the honey cake as reward for their impeccable behaviour ...

Or perhaps you could ride on horseback to your wedding? This can be very romantic and ties in with a medieval theme wonderfully.
Are there any other celebrants in Orkney?

We do not have any sort of 'exclusive franchise' on offering Pagan weddings in Orkney so we are happy to recommend other Scottish Pagan Federation celebrants, but because we are based in Orkney, if you did want to have a legal Pagan wedding in Orkney (or Shetland or the Highlands of Scotland), we are likely to be the most inexpensive option for you in terms of travel expenses.

If you want to get married in Orkney but don't want to have a Pagan celebrant, we are happy to recommend celebrants and Ministers from other beliefs, including Humanist (many of whom we know through Orkney Interfaith), as well as Registrars if you wish to have a civil wedding ceremony.
Do you perform rituals / tours outside of Orkney?

We are regional STGA guides and only insured and qualified to guide in Orkney.

We are able and licensed to perform legal rituals and ceremonies throughout Scotland (and non-legal rituals anywhere in the world) and we are both willing to travel on request (expenses would be due). However, for rituals outwith Orkney, we would recommend contacting other Scottish Pagan Federation celebrants who would be nearer, simply because their travel costs will necessarily be lower than ours (they won't have to take a ferry nor will they have a long drive). We can contact other Scottish Pagan Federation celebrants on your behalf on request.
We are in a same sex relationship, can you perform a legal wedding for us?

YES! We are delighted that from 2015 we have been able to perform legal weddings for same sex couples! The Scottish Pagan Federation were active in campaigning for a change in the law, previously we had only been able to perform non-legal blessings in conjunction with, but separate from, a Civil Partnership arranged through a Registrar, but from 2015 we no longer have to compromise and neither do our couples.

To the best of our knowledge, we performed Orkney's first legal Pagan same sex wedding in summer 2019; we have performed several more same sex weddings since then.
We're in a polyamorous relationship (more than two people), can you perform a legal wedding for us?

We would be delighted to perform non-legal relationship blessing rituals for people in polyamorous relationships but, sorry, the ritual would have no legal status. Legally, marriages can only be between two people in the UK.

I am transgender, can you perform a legal wedding for us?

We would be delighted to do so, but because this is still a complicated and sensitive area of law, you will need to consult with the Registrar. This is because Scots Law is still rather binery in nature and we will need to be advised whether your ceremony would be considered a different or same sex wedding - the wording is very slightly different. We are able to seek advice informally and confidentially on your behalf if you ask us to.
We're not from the UK, can you perform a wedding for us?

Scottish marriage law permits marriage rituals performed by an approved Scottish Pagan Federation Celebrant to be treated as a fully legal Pagan marriage under the Marriage (Scotland) Act 1977 and to be recognised as fully legal throughout Britain and the rest of the world. However, if you are travelling from outside the UK you are advised to obtain independent legal advice on this, especially if you require marriage visas or have any issues to do with residency.

To date, we have performed rituals for couples from USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Spain, Ukraine, England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland and, of course, Orkney!

Please refer to this official advice given by National Records Scotland.

We don't live in Scotland, or Orkney, do we have to be resident for a set period of time before the wedding?

You are allowed to get married in Scotland, including Orkney, even if you do not reside in Scotland. And, unlike England and Wales, you do not have to be resident in Scotland for any set period of time before your wedding. This means that anyone travelling to Orkney from outside Scotland, including overseas, can be officially married by Spiritual Orkney without having to pre-visit Orkney. You can even do the preliminary paperwork with the Registrar by post, telephone and email.
We have Orcadian roots, what can we include in our wedding ritual to make it more traditional?

There are a number of traditions unique to Orcadian weddings, on request we will be delighted to send you more information about this.

Since 2000, Orkney has it's own tartan too!
I have a middle name I never use / a nick-name which I prefer to my legal name, can I use that in the ritual instead of my full legal name?

Unless your ritual is a fully legal wedding, you may use whichever name you wish!

For fully legal weddings we will be pleased to advise accordingly. However, in Scottish law it is generally much easier to change your name legally compared to England and Wales. As a result of this, being referred to by a different name to your legal name can usually be catered for sympathetically and fairly easily in legal wedding rituals.

We belong to a coven / grove / group with our own Priest / Priestess whom we would like to perform the ritual, can they?

If you have your own Priest or Priestess whom you wish to perform the ceremony, and you require a celebrant in order to comply with 'the legal bits', we are willing to consider collaborating in order to co-officiate but we would ask that your Priest or Priestess is prepared to fully co-operate when working with us in order to ensure that the legal requirements are properly fulfilled.

To clarify: we are not able, nor are we willing, to simply turn up and say the legal sentences with you, we need to be fully involved in the ceremony in order to comply with the law. We are, however, very good 'team-workers' and are used to compromising and working with a range of people.
We would like our wedding guests to have speaking parts in the ritual, can they?

Of course and we would actively encourage participation.

Weddings where the guests are active and perhaps call quarters or read selected texts are very welcome. Generally, the more included your guests feel, the more we can get away from the whole 'congregation' / 'audience' feel of traditional weddings.

We are happy to discuss including your guests in your ceremonies, we would only ask that you check first with your guests that they are happy with this, simply as a courtesy please (because some people can be quite shy about this).

This option works especially well when the couple have children - the children can be included to bless the marriage so that the whole family can be part of your wedding ritual.
Can we combine a baby-naming ceremony with a marriage ceremony?

Of course you can. This option works exceptionally well as a blessing for the whole family.
We don't like / drink mead / alcohol / honey ... we want something different to drink such as whisky ... we want to include food for our guests.

As standard we supply a complementary mead toast (as a symbolic drink to honour the couple) in a quaich or drinking horn, for the couple only. For vegans, or those who do not drink alcohol, we supply apple juice as an alternative. You are also welcome to provide your own preferred drink of choice.

If you request that we supply a specific drink or food for your ritual, or for all your guests, and if you ask us to acquire it for you, we will do our best to supply what you request but we reserve the right to make an additional charge to cover any extra costs. We also require advanced notice please.

Examples of alternatives include:
  • Highland Park (Orkney) whisky
  • For vegans we recommend Black Portent from Orkney Wine
  • We can make a non-alcoholic mead for those who do not drink alcohol - 'hydromel' (made from a medieval recipe which includes apple juice and honey and spices but please provide adequate notice that you require this)
We will suggest alternatives if we have them or will acquire them on your behalf if you specifically request them. There may be an additional charge for this.

We can loan you a range of alternative drinking vessels such as horns (very Viking!), goblets, bowls, and chalices on request.

If you don't wish to have anything to drink, we can omit the toast from your ceremony, please just tell us at the time of booking.

With regarding serving food as part of the ritual, we recommend that it is symbolic quantities only, rather than the main meal, perhaps a loaf of bread to share, a cake to cut, oat-cakes ... you are welcome to provide this yourselves or we will do our best to supply what you request but we reserve the right to make an additional charge to cover any extra costs.

Please note that we can provide alcohol only to people who are over the age of 18. The provision of food and drink may be restricted by COVID-19 guidelines in place at the time.
We want to jump the broomstick, can we? Can we keep the broomstick afterwards?

We can loan you a traditional besom / broomstick to jump over which we decorate with seasonal flowers and herbs (where available).

If you wish to keep a besom afterwards, we make mini-besoms which you can jump over at the same time as the besom.

Alternatively you can bring your own broomstick or mini-besom. If you wish us to do so, we can decorate it for you.

We need a piper / harpist / drummer / musician!

We know many musicians in Orkney and are happy to make recommendations to you on request, this includes traditional bag-pipers, harpists, drummers, folk-musicians, and guitarists. Orkney folk are incredibly talented and are sure we will be able to find someone for your ceremony who will play a perfect wedding set for you.

There is usually an additional charge, payable directly to the musician, starting at £100 for a basic service.
